The weather is getting warmer which means it’s time to get outside. Spring is the perfect time for a backyard birthday party since it’s not cold anymore, but it’s not too hot, either.
The home-spun backyard birthday party is a dying art form. Of course, it’s easier to pay someone to do it for you somewhere else, but you may be missing out on the joy of designing and executing one yourself.

1. Star Wars
I don’t really like Star Wars–sorry to the 99% of the population that I just offended. But kids love it! Even before they’re old enough to watch the movies, they resonate with the quirky characters, the sword-fighting (alright, alright…I know it’s a light saber), and the epic battle of good vs. evil, in outer space no less.
For my son’s 7th birthday, we threw a Star Wars party complete with an R2D2 cake that I made using different kinds of candy for all the buttons and knobs. We played Pass-the-DeathStar, an adaptation of Hot Potato. There were Princess Leia cupcakes, complete with cookies for hair buns and Yoda Soda, a florescent green punch made with lime sherbet and Mountain Dew. But the best part, hands down, was when my husband dressed up as Darth Vader, and each kid got a chance to bring down the Dark Side with a can of silly string.
