If faith is an important part of your life, you are most likely already praying over your children. But if you’re anything like me, you don’t always know where to start! Phases are always coming and going in our family, and it’s hard to anticipate how to pray for the changes that are coming next.

Lucky for us, Scripture gives us the bones of what we need to pray, and we can fill in the gaps with our circumstances and individual needs.

I recently came upon these verses in Colossians 1:9-12

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,  being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[b] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”

We wanted to encourage family prayer, so when we opened the new Life As Mama Etsy Shop, we knew we wanted to create a family prayer guide.

pray over your children

You can use these phrases as a starting point for your prayers. Here is an example of how I applied these prayers to my children’s current circumstances:

1. MAY MY CHILDREN BE FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT GOD’S WILL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE, AND MAY THEY GROW IN SPIRITUAL WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING.

God, I pray that you give my children your wisdom and understanding when it comes to Your will. When they experience hard transitions or negative feelings, show them how they can use those circumstances to grow spiritually.

2. MAY THEY WALK IN WAYS THAT ARE WORTHY OF THE LORD.

It’s easy for kids to learn the ways of the world and follow the wrong paths. But I pray they learn to walk in a way that honors You and that they fight for what is good and worthy of Your call.

3. MAY THEY PLEASE GOD IN ALL THINGS.

Teaching my kids obedience is tough. I pray I can teach this lesson in a way that my children realize obedience is pleasing to You,  Lord.

4. MAY THEY PRODUCE FRUITS BY THEIR GOOD WORKS.

I pray that Your eternal purpose is furthered because of the ways my children choose to use their purpose here on earth. Though young, they can be disciples of you even now!

5. MAY THEY GROW IN THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF GOD.

May each interaction and time together further their knowledge of You, God. During our playtime or at bedtime when lessons are taught and shared, I pray that You speak truth through me from Your word.

6. MAY THEY BE STRENGTHENED WITH ALL POWER, ACCORDING TO GOD’S GLORIOUS MIGHT.

There will be times my children will become weak or disheartened. I pray for Your strength to intercede on their behalf. Remind them that they are strong in You alone and that they hold an eternal power that is stronger than anything they will face in this world.

7. MAY THEY HAVE ENDURANCE AND PATIENCE DURING DIFFICULT TIMES.

Give them the endurance and patience to be overcomers and not be defeated by difficult times. When they don’t see eye to eye with each other, replace their frustration with feelings of peace and love.

8. MAY THEY BE FILLED WITH JOY AND GRATITUDE.

In an entitled world, allow my children to care less about materialism and more about true, eternal joy. Let them experience and express gratitude for all the blessings they’ve been given and help me lead by example.
