The weather is heating up and summer will be here before I know it. While usually I look forward to pool days and trips to the beach, mostly all I can think about is how to dress my ever growing bump and surviving the crazy heat all while managing those fun things called hormones. I’ve been shopping around and looking for some must haves in my summer pregnancy wardrobe and here are my faves.

1. Maternity Shorts
With my last pregnancy I tried to fit into my regular clothes as long as possible (what was I thinking?). This time around I’m embracing the extra room and stretchy waistbands right away. While I don’t particularly love flashing my unnaturally pale legs to the world, Summer leaves me no choice but to reveal them. I plan to definitely pick up at least one pair of maternity shorts asap and as many pairs with a stretching waistband as possible.

2. Maxi dresses
Comfortable and flattering.. need I say more? Maxi dresses may just be your best friend this summer. One of the many perks is you don’t even have to shave your legs, unless you choose too 😉 But seriously, finding a couple of good maxi dresses will really help keep your bump cool and comfortable during the hot summer sun.

3. Tanks
Give me all the comfortable, loose-fitting, tanks this summer. I love that you can pair them with shorts, or jeans in the evenings when its cooler. They are flattering for the bump, while being loose enough you don’t feel suffocated in the heat. Throw on a light cardi or sweater on cooler days and you are all set. You might also want to try a size or two up in some basic and affordable tanks before you jump into full blown maternity wear.
4. Maxi Skirts
The other perfect item for expecting ladies. Most maxi skirts come with an elasticated waist, so you generally don’t even have to shop in the maternity section unless you prefer. If you have any in your closet now, you will most likely find they will fit for a good duration of your pregnancy. That’s a definitely a win-win! I love maxi skirts as they are so easy to pair and go with just about anything. They are a great transition piece as you move from season to season, for summer all your need is a simple tank, but replace with some booties and a chambray shirt and you’ll be all set for Fall.

5. Maternity Bathing Suit
If you are going to be expecting right through summer, it might be a good idea to invest in a maternity swim suit. While I was comfortable showing off my baby bump in a bikini, after a few months I had outgrown the top and didn’t want to keep buying up a size to keep it comfortable. Maternity suits are comfortable right away and still leave plenty of room for your bump, and other areas, to grow so you’ll get plenty of use out of your investment. Just make sure to plan in lots of pool days and beach trips to make the most out of it.

6. Kimonos
Don’t forget about all those kimonos and lightweight cardigans you have hanging in your closet. Most of the time you wont need them, but they are good to have when restaurants are blowing the AC super cold or the beach gets cool at night. Kimonos go over almost anything so make a perfect addition to your limited maternity wardrobe. They also add a little whimsy to an otherwise quite boring outfit.
