5 Tips For Creating Homemade Halloween Costumes

by Jordyn Smith September 6, 2016

Halloween may still be a couple months away, but it is never too early to start planning out your costumes. Popping over to that brand new Halloween-themed store to pick out a few costumes for the family may be easy, but it’s definitely more expensive and less fun than the things you can create at home. Clever matching family costumes, princess garb, and classic vampire wear can all be made in the comfort of your own kitchen table with a little bit of effort and a ton of fabric. Follow these five tips for stress free costume making this Halloween season.

1. Embrace Your Skill Level

Not all of us are sewing dynamos or crafting experts, and that’s totally okay! When creating a homemade Halloween costume for you, your children, or someone else, it’s important to recognize your skill level. While it’s always fun to challenge yourself a little, try not to overwhelm yourself with projects that are way above your skill level. Doing this will help you avoid frustration and disappointment and keep the holiday spirit alive.

2. Get A Head Start

Two days before the holiday isn’t the best time to start making your homemade Halloween costume, especially not if it has many components. We recommend starting a couple months ahead of time, doing this will give you tons of time to make, modify, and even change elements of the costume if necessary.

3. Keep It Comfortable

If you’re making a homemade costume for yourself, another adult, or an older teen, sacrificing a little bit of comfort for style or cool factor may be something that you’re willing to do. When you’re dealing with children, though, it is always important to keep things fun and comfy. Use fabrics and textures that are soft and fit well, choose accessories that don’t pinch or snag, and make sure any masks aren’t too tight or scratchy.

4. Be Creative

One of the biggest advantages to homemade Halloween costumes, aside from the experience and price, is the level of creativity it provides you. If you or your little one wants to be a shark princess or a ninja bear, those costumes may not be available at the store but they’re totally possible with a little bit of imagination. Don’t get too caught up in tradition or normalcy- be weird, be wild, be fun!

5. Make Sure It’s Sturdy

There’s nothing worse or more embarrassing than a Halloween that is constantly falling apart. If you’re leaving the sewing machine behind and assembling your costume using glue, make sure that you’re using glue that is specifically made to hold fabric together. This goes for things like masks and capes as well. Halloween costumes go through a lot during holiday parties or during trick-or-treating so it’s important to ensure that every component holds up.
