Having Trouble With Sleeping at Night? Try These Tips

Getting a good night’s sleep usually means that we wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. However, there are loads of different factors that affect the quality of sleep that you might get. So if you’re having trouble getting to sleep at night, here are a couple of things that could help you out.

What’s a good night of sleep mean to you?

First, let’s talk about what a good night of sleep means to you. There are some people out there that can function properly at work with just a few hours of sleep, but they usually need to take a nap when they get home. There are also others that just can’t do any work unless they get 8 hours of proper sleep. Since everyone has their own definition of what a good night’s sleep is, let’s try to define what healthy sleep is.

  • A sleep cycle generally lasts around 90 minutes. Breaking out of this cycle prematurely can make you feel groggy and tired when you wake up, hence why it’s important to try and sleep an entire cycle with no interruptions.
  • An average person should sleep around four to six cycles a night. This means getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep is usually a good amount.
  • However, waking up between these cycles is generally not a good thing. If you close your eyes and wake up 7 to 9 hours later, then that sounds like a good night of sleep.
  • Comfort is another important factor. If you wake up with aches in your muscles then it could indicate that your sleeping position is bad or your mattress and bed could be the issues.

Sleep is a complicated process. Everyone gets a different amount of sleep and we all have thresholds that we think are better for us. However, these factors are universal and what we should be aiming for when we sleep.

Ways to get better sleep

So what are some ways for us to get a better night of sleep? Here are some suggestions that you should try.

Create a nighttime routine

Our body is amazing at recognising situations and reacting accordingly. For example, if you can create a nighttime routine and fall asleep shortly after, then your body will recognise all of the actions you’re taking before you go to bed. Eventually, you’ll train your body to slowly relax at night, and you’ll find it easier to fall asleep when you carry out the same routine.

Consider taking something for sleep

Some people find that getting a good night’s sleep isn’t the most difficult thing, but due to certain circumstances and difficulties with their work or life, they might use an aid to help them sleep. This could be CBN for sleep, or it could be regular sleeping pills that are prescribed by their doctor. These sleeping aids aren’t guaranteed to work, but they’re a good option if you’ve run out of ideas on how to fall asleep faster. It’s important to note that some people will end up building resistance to sleeping pills, so we suggest that you try not to rely on them too much.

Have you tried ASMR?

ASMR has been growing in popularity lately and it’s been known to help people relax before going to bed. ASMR can be used in a variety of different ways. Some people listen to ASMR on a chair or sofa before they actually go to bed because they feel it can calm their nerves and soothe them before bedtime. They might even include it in their bedtime ritual. Others find that ASMR is more effective if they listen to it with headphones in as they try to sleep. This can be helpful for people that have tinnitus and find it difficult to get to sleep due to a high-pitched whine or buzz in their ear.

Is your bed the problem?

It’s also completely possible that your bed is the problem. While buying a new mattress may sound expensive, a good one can last a really long time and will drastically improve the comfort of your bed. It’ll help you wake up feeling refreshed, and some mattresses are great for helping you stay cool when the weather is hot. Overall, a good bed and mattress will help to regulate your body temperature and relieve any pressure on your joints. We highly recommend investing in a good mattress so that you can get a good night’s sleep.
