When it comes time to baby proof, you probably know the basics. The first thing that gets taken care of are your electrical outlets, cabinet doors and your stairwell by putting up some baby gates. These are relatively easy and obvious ways of protecting your child from immediate harm. This is also the place where many parents stop baby proofing. Sadly, household accidents account for the majority of ER visits for children under the age of 3, and over 70% of deaths from accidental injuries at home are found in children under 4. Kids spend the majority of their early years at home and thus, the majority of these injuries take place there. Accidental injuries are the leading cause of death in children 14 years and younger. 1. Crib
First things first, your baby will spend the majority of the first year of the life sleeping, and probably in their crib. It’s every parents worst nightmare to imagine their infant being a victim of SIDS or any type of crib related accident. Be sure you are not using a drop side crib, as they have been ruled unsafe due to potential for injury and should no longer be manufactured. Do not place pillows, blankets or stuffed animals in cribs, no matter how cute they are.
