Growing up, I had pets. Everything from cats to dogs to fish and even a turtle! There’s something about animals that kids love. Children often form strong relationships with their pets. They become best friends and companions. Most families consider their pets part of the family. (My parents’ dog even sits at the dinner table with them. I mean, really?) I guess this is why dogs are considered “man’s best friend.”
If you’re considering adding a four-legged canine friend to your clan, it’s important to choose a breed that will get along with your children. You want to consider things like energy level, size of the dog and temperament. Stay away from dogs that are known for being extremely wild, require lots of maintenance or that will compete with your children for attention. Consider a breed like one of these 6, which are great for families with children.
1. Golden Retriever
One of the most popular family dog breeds, Golden Retrievers love to play, are incredibly smart, kind and loyal. They are low-maintenance, but do require daily exercise (just like your kiddos!). Their gentle demeanor makes them a great choice for families looking to expand their brood.
2. Labrador Retriever
Another common dog breed among families is the other kind of retriever- the labrador. This dog breed is playful, patient, protective, and even loves to swim! Labs are also easy to train, so maybe you could try teaching your toddler and your puppy how to potty together! (Just make sure your little one uses the toilet, not the bushes outside.)
3. Beagle
For kids who spend a lot of time outdoors, a beagle might be a good choice. The breed, which needs daily exercise, loves being outside (Beagles were originally hunting dogs). Beagles are friendly and happy, and always up for a good time.
4. French Bulldog
For tinier tots, a smaller dog breed is probably best. Something like the french bulldog, which requires little maintenance, thanks to its fine coat. French bulldogs are intelligent, playful, affecionate and well-behaved. Just like your children, right?
5. Poodle
Known as one of the more “diva like” dog breeds, poodles are revered for their natural beauty. The poodle comes in different sizes, making it a dog breed that you can choose in whichever size works best for your family. The standard size, for example, is playful and adventurous, while the miniature one generally bonds with one particular person. The common denominator among all poodles is their need for regular grooming.
6. Collie
Every time I see a collie, all I can think of is Lassie. I never watched the show, but I knew the famous dog by name. That’s because collies are a favorite dog breed. What makes collies great for children is their highly affectionate nature. They are a mild-mannered dog breed that is easily trainable. The gentle, intelligent collie would make a wonderful companion for your family.
