Before having a child, the words “potty training” didn’t bear the gloom and doom that it now does. How hard could it be, I thought? HARD. My daughter is now two and a half and still shows no interest in using the potty. “I use my diaper” is her constant reply when I ask if she wants to use her princess potty seat, which is so cool I would use it if I could (it plays music when you pee in it!). Sometimes you need to wait until your child is truly ready, and other times you just need to find something that will motivate your kids to toss that diaper aside forever. If this sounds like your house, then check out some great ideas for what could get your toddler excited about that potty.

1. Books
Just like adults, kids like a little something to read when wiling their time away on the porcelain god. Give them certain books they can only read while attempting to use the potty. They don’t have to be books about going potty, but if that’s an extra motivator, why not? My daughter has personally taken a liking to Leslie Patricelli’s “Potty,” and I intend to use this to my advantage!

2. Potty Sticker Chart or Log
Kids love visuals and getting simple rewards like stickers. Post a sticker chart or log for everyone to see and congratulate your toddler on using the potty. Make a big deal of applying the stickers and get everyone excited.

3. Colored Toilet Water
Something as simple as a change of scenery may get your kids excited about using the potty. You can use some food coloring (blue will change to green with a little pee!) or get a fancy product like Whiz Kids which fizzes and changes the toilet water color when you throw a tablet in.
