Since becoming both a work from employee and a mother, I’ve realized that it’s insanely easy to get buried under paperwork. When I’m not stockpiling receipts for diapers and toddler shoes, I have weeks worth of filing that needs to get done for work. I’m normally an organized person, but something has got to give sometimes and it usually ends up being my home office. Like any normal mother, I found the ultimate craft and organizational tool to get me motivated to clean up on Pinterest. So naturally I’m going to show you just how easy it is to make your own mini fabric covered cork boards that are perfect for all your to-do lists, post-its or just to add some color to your barren walls! They will take you about 30 minutes and $10 or less!
Here’s What You’ll Need
3 Cork Trivets (you can find them in 3-packs for $3.99 at Ikea or World Market)
3 Colors of Fabric (less than a 1/4 yard each)
Glue Gun
Fabric Scissors
Command Strips
Pen or Pencil
Start by laying 1 cork trivet on your fabric, print side down. Trace a circle about 1 inch away from the trivet, and cut along the line. I did this for the first one, then just eye balled the rest because I couldn’t get my pencil to show up anyways on the fabric.
Notice the accuracy that I do NOT have, but it’s really no big deal because once you start gluing your fabric, you don’t see how crooked your circle is! After cutting, place about 1-2 inches of hot glue on the edge of your trivet, and start pulling the fabric tight against the glue. You will want to pull it so that you don’t have wrinkles on the front side of the cork board. If you use all patterns, you won’t have to worry so much.
When you’re done gluing, you should have a trivet that looks like this:
Yes, it will be bunchy in the back and that’s ok, as long as the front is smooth! You can take some extra drops of glue and glue down some of the thicker pieces if you cut a really big circle and find there’s a lot of fabric in the back. This will make it easier to stick them to the wall with your Command Strips. But first, repeat the above process on your remaining trivets.
Flip over your covered trivets (now your stylish, fabric cork boards) to affix your Command Strips. If you are familiar with 3M Command products, you know there are countless options of hooks and picture hangers. I personally got the small, poster sized strips because these cork boards are very light. I used 2 on each cork board.
All you have to do now is decide how you want to arrange your cork boards and stick them up! Since my desk area is command central, I chose to hang them over the desk. They will serve as some much needed color in my gray toned office and may even motivate me to finish my to-do’s and keep these cork boards empty!
