Why HGTV Makes Me A Better Mom

I have yet to meet a mom who doesn’t binge watch HGTV every now and then! The time to watch this “life-changing” network is few and far between because we are busy living the “mom life,” so I decided it was important to make a strong case for why HGTV makes me a better mom. A long-shot right? It’s actually easier than you think…

hgtv

1. It allows me to see a clean home at least once a day.

I do my best to keep the house clean, but it’s difficult to maintain with kids whose ultimate goal is to destroy. So I turn down the lights and turn up the TV to admire other people’s beautiful, clean homes! I imagine what it feels like and place myself into the high heels of the home’s new makeover recipients.

2. It’s a safe show to play around the kids.

We all get tired of the same shows: Daniel Tiger, Paw Patrol, or all things Disney. It’s not often that we can find a show that we enjoy but is also safe for the kids to hear in the background. HGTV offers shows like Fixer Upper or Property Brothers that you can turn on in the morning and play until night. You just need to pay attention to the reveals at the end of each show! The rest is just background noise that’s safe to have around kids.

3. HGTV inspires you to put emphasis on your everyday environment.

The home is the only place that you have full control to set the tone and choose the environment. From a calm and peaceful place to a modern, artsy home, you can be inspired by HGTV. Us mamas value creating a great home for our families, but we don’t always know what we want or how to do it! HGTV offers the inspiration and the creative support we need.

4. It’s a constant flow of “Happily Ever Afters.”

During a day full of kid tantrums and never feeling good enough, it’s nice to guarantee a happy ending with HGTV!

5. It teaches us contentment.

We all have a dream home, but they aren’t always within reach! Watching the remodeling of homes or seeing the way certain designers reuse flea market or antique store finds really helps you create a vision for what you already have! Though motherhood is a blessing, I often find myself wishing for the next phase of life and not enjoying where I am in the present. Any lessons on contentment encourage me as a mother! (Thanks, HGTV!)

Tell us in the comments why HGTV makes you a better mom so we can make our list longer and more convincing *wink*

Decorating on a Budget

One of the best lessons HGTV teaches is how to transform spaces without breaking the bank. By showcasing budget-friendly renovations and DIY projects, the network empowers viewers to take on home improvement tasks that might otherwise feel intimidating. Not only does it inspire creativity, but it also encourages mothers like me to involve our kids in the process, turning chores into fun learning experiences.

Decorating on a budget becomes a lesson in resourcefulness for our family. From thrift store finds to clever repurposing of old furniture, we learn to appreciate the journey of creating a home rather than simply purchasing it. This approach fosters a sense of pride and accomplishment, which can translate into improved family dynamics and a stronger bond as we tackle projects together.

Self-Care and Home Environment

HGTV often highlights the importance of a nurturing home environment, emphasizing how our spaces can impact our mental well-being. A clean and organized home can create a calm atmosphere, which is essential for busy moms juggling daily responsibilities. As I watch these shows, I am reminded to prioritize self-care by designing a living space that brings me joy and peace amidst the chaos of motherhood.

Moreover, the act of decorating and creating inviting spaces can serve as a form of self-care itself. Whether it's adding plants to brighten a room or creating a cozy reading nook, these small changes can enhance our daily life significantly. By making our homes a sanctuary, we provide not just a safe space for our children, but also a restorative environment for ourselves.

Engaging Children in DIY Projects

HGTV's plethora of DIY project shows provide an excellent opportunity for me to engage my children in home improvement tasks. Involving kids in these activities not only teaches them valuable skills but also fosters a sense of teamwork and responsibility. From crafting decorations for a seasonal holiday to helping paint a room, these projects strengthen our bond and create lasting memories.

Encouraging my children to participate in DIY projects has other benefits too. It can ignite their creativity and inspire independence as they express themselves through hands-on activities. Plus, these shared experiences can lead to discussions about the importance of caring for our living spaces, instilling values of responsibility and pride in homeownership from a young age.
