Prayer is something we know we should do, but sometimes it’s our last resort. Yet, it’s one of the most powerful tools to bring about change!
When I was first married, someone gave me the book “The Power Of A Praying Wife.” This was intimidating to someone who isn’t naturally a prayer warrior. We all have our spiritual strengths, and prayer wasn’t one of mine at the time. But I quickly learned that’s why I NEEDED this book; I dove in head first. Since then, I am always looking for ways I can be praying for my husband. I used to try to change him, but none of my efforts were honored because the changes I was trying to implement were my personal preference and not what was right for him. Now, I pray I can better honor and support who my husband was created to be.
I still have a long way to go, but hope the prayer topics below can help you better support your husband spiritually.
1. Put God First.
Proverbs 3:6 “In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.”
I used to struggle with the fact that my family doesn’t come first — God does! I need to be praying that my husband keeps God as his central focus. Only then will everything else fall into place!
2. Lead with integrity, wisdom, and humility
Ephesians 1:17 “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”
There are some ways that I lead the family but many ways my husband leads. Instead of just trying to grow as a leader, I need to pray that my husband leads our family with integrity, wisdom, and humility.
3. Love their wives
Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
Wives often get lost in the “submit to your husbands” command of the Bible and forget that it’s our husbands’ job to love their wives. We are married to imperfect beings, so their love will never be perfect, but we can be praying our husbands learn to love us better and follow the example of Christ’s love for the church!
4. Strength to fulfill his mission
Ephesians 3:16 “ I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.”
We are all created for a purpose, and it’s the enemy’s job to distract us or keep us from our mission! We must be praying against this and ask that God equips our husbands with the strength and ability to fulfill their calling!
5. Protection from the enemy
1 Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
As I said, the enemy wants to destroy our husbands and our marriage. But we have already won! God has the power to defeat darkness, so we must be on guard and pray for protection from the enemy!
There will be hard days — days when you have no other weapon but prayer. Be hopeful and confident in the power of prayer!
