Let’s be honest, just because you’ve had one child doesn’t mean that you’re super mom and can do it all on your own. We may like to think that we know everything now and that it’ll be a breeze having a second, third, or fourth baby, but the truth is that there are still lots of things you’ll need help and assistance with, especially since you have other kids around. Having more than one child is certainly more difficult than having just one since your attention, time, and energy has to be diverted among all of them and can’t be solely focused on your brand new baby like it was with your first. If you’re expecting a child, other than your first, here are 5 must-haves for your baby that every experienced mom needs.
1. Baby Swings/Bouncers
With your first child, you have lots of time to hold your brand new baby as much as you want. Can we all get a moment of silence for those days we sat on our couch with our only newborn child and binge watched shows on Netflix? Well, I hate to tell you, but those days are long gone when it comes to having more children. You’re not always going to be free to hold that precious baby. That means you’ll need a safe place to lay your baby down and keep them happy. Baby swings or bouncers are the perfect solution for this. The baby still gets the movement they want and the swing will cradle them, making them feel like they’re being held. This will allow you to place your baby in the swing while you change other kid’s diapers, wipe up spilled milk, or give your other child a bath.
2. Hands Free Breast Milk Pump
With other children running around getting into things, you’re not going to be able to sit down and pump, uninterrupted. Stopping every few minutes to help your older children is really going to mess up that pumping session and probably cause less milk flow. A great way to still get in some breast pump time, while still taking care of your other children, is to invest in a hands free pump. This will allow you to walk around hands free to clean, cook, change diapers, and so much more.
3. Backpack Diaper Bag
As a first time mom, you probably purchased a really cute diaper bag that just goes over your shoulder. Well, now that you’ll have a newborn AND other children, you’re definitely going to need a diaper bag that is less hassle. A backpack option is great because you can throw it on your back and don’t have to worry about it sliding off your shoulder while you’re chasing your toddler through Target holding your new baby. All you have to do is slip it on your back, then go about your merry way. I actually have one and I love it. It’s so easy to use and most of the time I forget I’m even wearing it when I’m out and about.
4. Baby Carrier
Some babies just need to be held. Simply putting them in a swing or bouncer, just doesn’t do it for them. However, that doesn’t mean you have the time to hold your baby for hours on end. That’s when a baby carrier becomes really handy. You can place your baby in the carrier, then continue on with your regular “mom” duties while being completely hand free and still making your baby happy. Seriously, though, if you don’t have one and you’re expecting another child, run, don’t walk, to go get one. You’ll thank me later when your baby is crying to be held and your toddler just smeared their poopy diaper all over your walls. We’ve got a great list of them right here.
5. Double Stroller
Going out and about with more than one child is certainly going to be more stressful with more than one child. You’re going to need a place for your youngest 2 to sit so you don’t have to chase after them the whole time. One of my biggest fears is my child running away or getting lost while we’re out and about and not being able to find them. With a double stroller you can place your new baby and your toddler in it while you walk around with peace of mind. If you have more than two children, you can always purchase attachments (at least for some strollers) where they can sit in the back by you or stand on a little platform.
