On April 22, 192 countries will coordinate the celebration of Earth Day all over the globe. Started in 1970, Earth Day was started to celebrate and show support for environmental protection. It’s important that we teach our children the responsibility we all have in taking care of our earthly home. With Earth Day just around the corner, check out these 9 easy ways the whole family can start living a greener lifestyle today.
1. Carry A Reusable Bag
Headed to the market? Carry a reusable bag with you. These bags sturdier than the typical plastic shopping bags, allowing you to fit more items into each bag, which means fewer trips to carry groceries into the house!
2. Start A Compost Bin
There are dozens of items in your house right now that can be used to start a compost bin. Short on space, or no backyard? No problem! You can create a small compost bin using a plastic storage bin with ventilation holes.
3. Sort Your Garbage And RECYCLE!
In our house, refuse is sorted into three groups: compost (any non-animal/non-greasy food scraps), recycling (glass, plastic, aluminum, paper), and landfill (everything else). This may sound like common sense advice to many people, but I can’t stress enough the importance of recycling! A few minutes of careful sorting can make a huge impact in reducing your waste output. Your local grocery store or hardware store may have a receptacle to deposit harder to recycle items, such as batteries, light bulbs, plastic bags, and wine corks.
