9 Special Ways To Celebrate Your Children

by Leena Kollar January 6, 2017
written by Leena Kollar

As moms, we can’t help but beam with pride over every little thing our children do. Their first steps, their first day of school, their first dance recital, we take way too many photos and brag about our kiddos at those moments. But some accomplishments deserve to be celebrated because they bring out our children’s inner selves. We shouldn’t just be proud of those good grades, soccer game wins and karate black belts. We should also acknowledge the sweet things our children do that bring out their compassion and love. The things they do that they don’t necessarily have to do.

Let’s show our children how proud of them we are just for being themselves. The ways they’ll impress us in this area are infinite, but these 9 ideas are a great way to practice loving our children through the little stuff.

1. Getting Themselves Dressed

By the time your child is about 3 years old, she’ll start being more proactive when it comes to getting dressed. You’ll be so proud of her for picking out her own clothes, even though she doesn’t yet understand the concepts of matching, or dressing for the weather. Knowing that your toddler is independent enough to choose her own outfit is a great feeling! And no matter what she puts on, she always looks absolutely adorable!

2. Giving You Compliments

The other day, my son was sitting next to me and he gave me a side hug. He said, “You’re my best mommy.” And even though I’m his only mommy, his words melted my heart! Whenever he says nice things to me, it makes me feel good. He will often thank me for making him meals, or picking out his clothes, or helping him clean up. He’s told me I’m pretty, and how proud of me he is. I know he doesn’t really understand a lot of the things he says, but his sensitive soul gives me butterflies, and I love that he’s not afraid to express himself.

3. Making You Breakfast

Many children, often at the nudging of their father, gift their mom with breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day or other special occasions. And often, this means being served toast with a giant chunk of unevenly spread butter in the middle. Or a bowl of cereal that has five Cheerios and 2 cups of milk. Or crispy bacon that is way overdone. Whatever it is our children make for us, it’s the best breakfast ever! Because it came from them, and it came from their hearts. Gotta celebrate the caring nature our children embody when they make a special meal for us.

12 Hilarious Truths I’ve Learned Since Becoming A Mom

by Leena Kollar November 28, 2016
written by Leena Kollar

Before you become a mother, you have all these ideas in your mind about what the experience will be like. But the truth is, there’s nothing that can prepare you for the journey of motherhood. You anticipate the joy you’ll feel, but the true joy is immeasurable. You know there will be sleepless nights, but you underestimate just how intensely sleep deprivation affects you. And you know that “kids say the darndest things,” but you don’t fully realize just how entertaining they can be until you are in the midst of them.

My children have made me laugh, smile, cry, scream and beam with pride. There’s never a dull moment when my children are around. And I’ve gained a lot of knowledge since entering the mommy world. Not just your everyday “here’s how you put a onesie on” knowledge, but the stuff that no book, parenting expert or seasoned parent can teach you. I’m talking about the stuff that makes this whole parenting thing worth it.

1. Breastfeeding Envy Is Real

I’m not talking about moms who wish they could breastfeed but can’t. I’m talking about my toddler son, who one time set up my nursing pillow on his lap, lifted his shirt and asked if he could feed his baby sister. It’s so cute that he wanted to help, but he got his first lesson in anatomy that day.

2. “Messy Hair, Don’t Care” Applies To Babies Too

You learn to care less about your appearance the longer you’re a mom. And I guess that attitude rubs off on our children. My daughter tries pulling out her hair tie whenever I put one in her hair, and I suppose it’s because she wants to rock that “bed head” look. She’s darn cute no matter what, so sometimes I let her win the messy hair battle.

3. Children Can Sleep In Any Position

I personally sleep best in my own bed, bundled up in the fetal position. But children? Pssh. They are like little octopuses, tossing and turning to and fro, until they finally get comfortable with their foot sitting pressed against your eye. Any co-sleeping mama knows how this goes! Don’t be surprised if one day you wake to find your little one in a handstand position snoozing away.

5 Precious Baby Keepsake Ideas

by Leena Kollar November 4, 2016
written by Leena Kollar

When you become a mama for the first time, you get overwhelmed with emotions. The first few days, you feel overjoyed. Once you bring baby home, you feel anxious. And after the first few weeks, you feel exhausted (unfortunately, that never ends.) But through it all, one feeling remains: love. Pure, unconditional, how did I get so lucky? LOVE. Every moment with your baby, even the ones that make you want to sit and sob, or poke your eyeballs out, even those moments are ones you want to remember. Because someday, believe it or not, you’ll miss those moments!

But, you can use a special keepsake to hold onto those memories. Those first moments when your life truly began. You can keep something of your baby’s as a reminder of his first days, or you can create a memento and give it as a gift to a new mom. Cherish the time you have with your baby, and consider one of these ideas to permanently etch those memories into your mind.

source: This Grandma Is Fun

1. Newborn Baby Shadow Box

I love the idea of collecting items like your baby’s birth announcement, a diaper, her info card from the hospital, etc. and making a collage using a shadow box. Not only can you display it in the baby’s nursery, you can store it in a special place and pull it out anytime you want to reminisce. (Most likely not during the teenage years.)

This Grandma Is Fun has some great ideas for putting together a shadow box keepsake.

source: Make Life Lovely

2. DIY Metallic Hand Prints

You’ll get to keep the hand and footprints that the nurse takes of your baby at the hospital. But what about turning those prints into a work of art? There are tons of great ideas out there for ways to use your baby’s hand prints. This DIY project adds a hint of cool by using an embossing method that creates a metallic texture! The great thing about this idea is that it’s never too late to do it.

Check out the full tutorial over at Make Life Lovely.

3. Baby’s First Outfit

The first outfit you dress your baby in is incredibly special. That’s the first outfit she will wear as an official member of the “real world,” and it’s likely the outfit she’ll come home from the hospital in. Even if you don’t create anything with that outfit, it’s worth holding onto so that you’ll always have a way to go back to the day you officially become a mother.

You’ll find some great tips on choosing baby’s first outfit by visiting It’s My Generation.

4. Receiving Blanket Toy

OMG I think this keepsake idea is my favorite! There’s a grandma with an Etsy shop who takes your baby’s hospital receiving blanket and turns it into a keepsake toy. You can choose a bear or a bunny, and even get baby’s name embroidered on it! This keepsake is one that your child could even pass down to her firstborn.

Head over to Mimosas On The Porch to learn more about this adorable idea, and find links to the Etsy shop.

5. Christmas Ornament

If you’re one of those moms who likes hanging handmade ornaments on the Christmas tree, a keepsake ornament is really easy to make. Just get a large, clear ball that you can open, and stick special items inside. Baby’s hospital bracelet and hat are two that should fit with no problem, but you can add whatever else you like. Every year, you’ll get to see those precious memories hanging on your Christmas tree.

Take a look at Midwestern Moms to see a step-by-step tutorial.

Much like a mother’s love, tattoos are one of the most permanent things in the world. 10 Paw-sitively Purrfect Pet Halloween Costumes

by Leena Kollar October 10, 2016
written by Leena Kollar

There are only a few weeks left until Halloween, so hopefully you’ve got your children’s costumes figured out. But what about your fur babies? You’re not going to leave them out of the fun, are you? When I had a cat, I loved dressing her up in cute outfits. (She, however, hated being my personal dress up doll.) Our pets are part of the family, so they should have a fun costume too! If you need some ideas on what to put your four legged kids in for Halloween, maybe these ideas will give you some inspiration.

source: Sage & Sparkle

1. Batman

Your little pooch can be a hero in black by wearing an adorable Batman getup for Halloween. All you need is a black t-shirt, some yarn and a couple of printouts for a mask and logo. Your canine kid will be so cute, I wouldn’t be surprised if he scored a giant bowl of dog treats from people who mistook him for a true trick-or-treater!

Learn how to make this (no-sew!) DIY costume at Sage & Sparkle.

2. Stegosaurus

What’s cute and green and spiky all over? This guy. And your pup could be just as adorable on Halloween. With a few foam sheets and a green tee, you can turn your barking buddy into the cutest dog-osaurus around!

Head over to The Next Bird for details on making this costume.

3. Sushi

If you are what you eat, what does that mean for this pup? I guess it means that if you like sushi, you should dress your dog up like a sushi roll for Halloween. I personally don’t like sushi, but I’d definitely steal a smooch from this pooch!

Check out Eat + Sleep+ Make for instructions on rolling up this costume.

8 Hilarious Mugs For Coffee Drinking Mamas

by Leena Kollar October 5, 2016
written by Leena Kollar

I’m not a coffee drinker, but I do enjoy a hot cup of tea or hot chocolate this time of year. I know that lots of moms can’t survive without their morning coffee (even when it’s gone cold from sitting in the microwave for three hours), and I totally get it! Caffeine makes me a little too wired, so I stay away, but for you mamas who can’t survive without your daily cup of joe, I found some seriously appropriate mugs that are sure to make that steaming hot reheated coffee taste better.

Maybe you have a mama friend, or perhaps your own mom, who drinks too much (coffee), and you need a gift idea for the holidays. I think these would all make adorably fun stocking stuffers!

source: Express

1. This Could Be Wine

Even if nobody sees you drinking from this mug, it’s pretty funny. And so true of life as a mother! We all have days where we want to (or actually do) chug down a few bottles glasses of wine. Listen, if you fill your coffee mug up with some Merlot, I’m not going to judge you. Your secret is safe with me!

You can find this “coffee” mug at Express.

source: Kohl’s

2. Party Animal

Naps? What are those? Those are the things my children should take everyday so I can have time to get stuff done. But does it usually happen? Nope. That’s why I wish I had a scheduled nap time everyday! You feel me, mamas? If so, you probably agree that the best kind of party is a nap party. Sadly, the closest we’ll come to that is co-sleeping with monkey gymnasts who sprawl across the entire bed.

Grab this nap appreciation mug from Kohl’s.

source: Nordstrom

3. Coffee Gets Me

I mean, who needs a therapist when you have coffee, right? With every sip, it’s like that dark brewed goodness is reaching into your soul and saying, “I understand.” Dr. Coffee, you’re amazing. You know how to completely change my mood and motivate me for the entire day!

Get inspired when you drink from this therapeutic mug, available at Nordstrom.

source: Shoptiques

4. #GiveMeCoffee

Hashtags are #everywhere these days, #AmIRight? And if you’re one of those moms who spends her days on Facebook, Pinterest and Life As Mama (thank you!), this mug is definitely for you. It comes with a dry erase marker, so you can change the hashtag everyday, depending on your mood. Isn’t that cool? I mean, #cool?

Get trendy with your #morningmug by buying this from Shoptiques.

source: Pier 1 Imports

5. Shhh!

Isn’t it annoying when you’re trying to enjoy your coffee and the kids keep trying to tell you everything about everything, and start asking you a million “why?” questions? Now you can just lift up your mug and show it to them. “When it reaches the “now talk” line, that means mommy is coffee-d up enough not to find you obnoxious, and I’ll be happy to sit and listen to you then.”

Enjoy more quiet mornings by drinking from this silent sipper, which you can find at Pier 1 Imports.

source: Shoptiques

6. Unleaded Or Diesel?

For moms like me who don’t drink coffee, we try other forms of fuel to keep us going. But one thing is for sure- every mama needs something to fill her up each day! Whether it’s a hug, a few kind words, a trip to Target, or a few cups of cappuccino, mom fuel is different for everyone. If your fuel involves consuming a beverage, this mug is perfect for enjoying it in!

Head over to Shoptiques to get this refillable fuel carrier.

source: Kohl’s

7. Love You A Latte

We moms love our children more than anything. But we also love our coffee. (Or other decaffeinated drinks.) And some days, we really love our coffee. We treat our coffee like it’s one of the girls. Like we need it in our life as much as we need the air we breathe. We love our coffee so much, we drink from a mug that states the message loud and clear.

Show your coffee some affection by snatching up this love-ly mug at Kohl’s.

source: Dormify

8. Boss Mom

Dads like to think that because they are “the man of the house,” that they make all the rules. But we all know that moms really wear the pants. Yoga pants, trousers, mom jeans, we call the shots, yo! And if you need further proof of this, just check out the big, bad boss mug we down our coffee from.

Take a stand by heading to Dormify and showing your family that you mean business with this mug.

5 Hilarious Kids Books You Need Now

by Ellice Vargas August 30, 2016
written by Ellice Vargas

I love to read, I read everything I could get my hands on when I was a kid. I spent endless nights turning on the light after I was tucked up in bed, reading page after page. Such happy and magical moments I would love to pass on to my daughter as she grows. My husband and I have read to her and with her from a young age and now that she is 2 she has so many of her favorite books memorized that she can basically “read” the story to us herself. While I enjoy all the special times we get to spend over our mutual love for books, there are times when I think I cannot possibly read Dr. Seuss one more time. After a little hunting for some new and fun books I came across some goodies which aren’t just fun for the kiddos, but for us parents too. Check out these hilarous kids books you should definitely add to your collection.

1. You’re Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada

We all know their is a secret war on whether our babes will say Mama or Dada first. Each parenting is rooting for their own team. Take your competition up a notch with this hilarious book by NBC’s, The Tonight Show’s host, Jimmy Fallon and find out how to get your baby’s first word to be Dada.

2. The Gas We Pass

This boo’s humous take on an everyday and normal body function is refreshingly to-the-point and factually correct. It’s never too early to start teaching them about the body, right? Plus, it’s fun to read about something other than farm animals every once in a while.

3. The Book With No Pictures

A kids book with no pictures, you ask? Thats exactly what I thought when I first came across it. But in fact, while it isn’t much to look at, (at all), the hilarious words and sounds the reader is forced to repeat makes this one of the silliest books I have ever read. It will be a sure hit with the kiddos.

51UcCfyJpPL

Source: Amazon

4. Seriously, Just Go To Sleep

While a perfectly acceptable book to read to your kiddos, the humor comes from the underlying desperate attempt for your child to go to sleep wrapped up in creative rhymes. It’s the perfect way to enjoy story time while also using Jedi mind tricks to will your child to sleep. At least thats what I like to think.

51LYILw0o-L

Source: Amazon

5. Go The F**k To Sleep

The not-so-appropriate counter part to the above book, yet wildly spot on to the very real parent struggle.  I have to point out this ISN’T actually a children’s book. In fact, this book should probably be kept far way from your child’s bookshelf. But books aren’t just for kids, right? While you are picking up “Seriously, Just Go To Sleep” for you to enjoy with the kiddos, pick up a copy of this for you too. We all need to laugh (read: cry) about the struggles of parenting every now and again.

You can find all these books and more at www.amazon.com.

4 Things People Say When You’re Expecting A Christmas Baby

by Ellice Vargas August 15, 2016
written by Ellice Vargas

When we found out we were expecting baby number two, I did one of those quick online due date calculators and practically fell out of my chair when I realized our precious bundle was expected to arrive on December 25th. Of course, I know they are not 100% reliable, and babies are notorious for arriving any day but their anticipated due date. However, our doctor did confirm we had a Christmas due date and since then I often cringe the moment someone asks me when our baby is due. Believe it or not, people seem to have a lot of opinions about this subject and don’t hold back from sharing them with me. Here are just a few of the comments I’ve had so far.

babies-644264_1280

1. Well There Goes Your Holiday Plans

Since I’m pregnant and not bed ridden, I’m pretty sure I can still enjoy the run up to the holiday festivities, and even enjoy most of our holiday traditions. No, I wont be jetting off to visit any out of state family, or probably driving very far, but I will still be able to function. The last thing I want to be doing when waiting for baby boy to turn up, is sitting at home twiddling my thumbs. I may have to take it easy and stick close to home, but believe me, I will be soaking up every second of my favorite holiday and family time.

2. Did You Plan It?

First of all, the fact you are openly asking about my sex life, is really none of your business. Then are you really asking if we counted back from Christmas, ensured we had a roll in the sheets, all to hopefully end up with a Christmas baby is slightly ridiculous. Did we hope to have another baby, yes. Did we plan to have a specific due date, no.

3. Their Birthday Is Going To Suck Every Year

While I know it’s not ideal to have your birthday smack bang in the holiday season every year, a little confidence and support in my patenting and party planning would be appreciated. Maybe we’ll wait until January to throw and special party. Maybe he will be showered in love and special attention from all his extended family that are gathering for the holidays. Who knows, maybe he will actually enjoy having his birthday during the holidays? I don’t know either, but I sure hope he knows we do whatever we can to make him feel special each year.

4. The Baby Needs To Be Born On “___________”

Since I have a Christmas Day due date we have a whole selection of opinions on when the baby should actually be born. I think this is a common sentiment with any due date, however I have noticed the opinions are much stronger this time around. I personally am not opposed to him arriving before or after Christmas Day, especially given about 5% of babies are actually born on their due dates. I am not, however, going to plan for him to be early or late. I just know that when he does decide to make an appearance, it will be one of the best days of my life, and I can’t wait to do it all over again.

7 Hilarious Baby Shower Gag Gifts

by Leena Kollar August 2, 2016
written by Leena Kollar

If laughter is the best medicine, get ready to be healed! Oh my gosh, I love a good laugh. I especially love laughing when I see someone’s reaction to receiving an embarrassing gift. Maybe it’s because I don’t get embarrassed easily, and I’m a big smart alec. I was raised by a father who was always playing jokes on us and his brothers (my uncles) were also big jokesters. Now that I’m a mom, I can’t wait to start embarrassing my kids! Err…I mean…

These gag gifts are great to give a friend with a sense of humor. I’ve always felt like gag gifts are a waste of money, but these are so funny, I would buy each one twice! Seriously. If you have a baby shower to attend soon, consider adding one of these to your mom-to-be friend’s gift bag. (You should probably get them something really nice too, not just the gag gift.)

source: Urbasm

1. Crib Dribbler

I remember getting one of these from my cousin, and thinking, “what in the WORLD is this? Is she serious?” It actually took a phone call to my mother and a curiosity about what was actually inside the box to figure out that it was a gag gift! No, our children are not gerbils. But holy moly, this makes me crack up just thinking about it!

If you need ideas on pranking other friends for the holidays, check out Urbasm, where there are more fun gag gifts to make you giggle.

2. Dirty Diaper Survival Kit

Even though baby showers are most often held for moms, it’s usually acceptable to include a gift or two for dad (especially for co-ed showers). I know there are moms out there who are grossed out by changing diapers, but let’s be realistic. Dads are the ones who freak out over feces. What I find funny about this kit is that it includes a nose clip- my husband actually uses one! So you see, it’s perfect for squeamish papas who fear diaper duty.

Head over to Amazon to get one of these for your expectant mom friend(s).

3. The Snotsucker

I honestly don’t know if this is intended to be a gag gift or not. But considering the thought of using it actually makes me gag, I’ll go with yes. You basically stick one end in your baby’s nose and the other end in your mouth. Suck out the snot and then, I don’t know, spit it out? Swallow it? Rinse it down with a bottle glass of wine? It comes with a little foam piece that acts as a barrier, so the snot apparently doesn’t make it into your mouth. If you’re brave enough to use this for real, I guess more power to you. But give it to someone without that little foam piece and watch them squirm!

4. Li’l Lager Baby Bottle

In my family, there are a lot of rednecks drinkers. I’m not a big one myself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one of my family members actually used this product. I mean, yeah, it’s funny. But only give it to a mom who’s smart enough not to use it in public. Those CPS people mean business (or so I hear), and you don’t want to be held responsible when your friend gets arrested. No, really, you know she’d expect you to bail her out of jail, right?

For the big drinkers in your social circle, snatch one of these up from fredandfriends.com. The site has lots of funny and clever stuff to check out.

5. Pee-pee Teepee

You know, if you are going to be a parent, you should realize that there is about a 150% chance you’ll be peed or pooped on in your life. I suppose that’s why someone invented this. But really, it seems to me it would be more trouble than it’s worth. By the time you get it ready, hold it up and cover that little wee wee, the pee is bound to be flying all over anyway!

If you think your almost-a-mom friend would get a kick out of this, you can find a pack on Amazon.com.

6. Billy Bob Grillz Pacifier

Have a mom-to-be friend who is a little…gangsta? She’ll probably love this pacifier. If she’s all about luxury, then surely she’ll want to fill her baby’s mouth with gold, right? The interesting thing is, this product says it is for ages “3 months to 99 years,” so I guess after the baby loses his baby teeth, he can suck on this until his adult teeth come in.

You can see the other style this pacifier comes in by visiting Amazon.com. Holla!

7. Nonstop Baby Crying Card

What is something parents absolutely hate? A baby who won’t stop crying. For first time moms, a reality check might be the perfect baby shower gift, and this card is a great way to give them that. Once you pull the tab to engage the card, it plays the sound of a baby crying for more than 3 hours. Even when the card is closed. But worst of all, it starts playing louder when the button is pushed to try and stop it! This card is so, so bad. But it’s also so so good!

Send one to your baby shower guest of honor by purchasing it from Joker Greeting. The company has other prank card items to look at too.

5 Hilarious Places Moms Go For Alone Time

by Ellice Vargas August 1, 2016
written by Ellice Vargas

Alone time is few and far between when you become a mom. Long gone are the days when you sipped your coffee in peace before heading off to work, or eating lunch without small hands grabbing at your plate. Honestly, I salute you if you can get yourself to the bathroom by yourself. As a stay-at-home mom I have figured out a few ways to get that precious alone time, no matter how ridiculous the location.

1. Your Closet

If you have a good sized walk in closet then this one is for you. Basically any area in your home where you can shut the door and binge eat anything with sugar before your curious toddler comes knocking on the door is my idea of bliss. Sometimes I can manage 7 whole minutes alone before Peppa Pig is no longer entertainment enough and my two year has to know why I’m not watching it too.

2. Target

Sometimes I leave my “super important” errands until my husband is home so I have to leave the house and go to Target for that incredibly vital item, alone. Luckily Target has everything you could possibly need so there is always an excuse for a visit. I usually indulge in a Starbucks, (how great is it that so many Targets have a Starbucks Cafe? #winning), and browse the isles slowly. Warning, beware of the Target time-warp, if you have 5 missed calls from your husband then it’s a good sign your “errand” has taken over 2 hours.

3. The Car

The car is my sanctuary. I remember when my daughter was only 9 days old and I had to run an errand, that 20 minutes was such a rush, I think I circled the block 4 times before I decided to call it a day. Since then the car has often become the quickest escape for must needed alone time. Whether it’s going for a drive, hitting a drive-thru to pick up dinner and eating your fries alone or bringing a book and grabbing a coffee and reading while the littles take a nice car-nap,

4. Bathroom

I used to think locking myself in the bathroom to do my business in private was a luxury. I have since realized that not only is it a luxury but also that, given there is an appropriate distraction in place, it’s the best place in my home to have 5 minutes of un-inturupted Instagram scrolling or browsing online shopping. Just be careful to stretch out those extra long pee breaks before your toddler catches on and wants to join in on the party.

5. The Mail Box

It’s amazing what the 3 minute walk to collect the mail can do for your soul. You are outside and alone! Sometimes if I want to linger I open the mail and read it before I come back in the house. Yep, this is living on the edge people.
