Making hot chocolate from a flimsy, silver packet seems like a childhood rite of passage, right? And, of course, who doesn’t like those tiny dehydrated marshmallows?
The instant stuff is great, especially on the fly. But sometimes, there’s a tiny voice in my head that screams: if you can’t pronounce the ingredients on the side of the box, make it yourself!
Thankfully, hot chocolate is easy to make homemade. You probably have all the ingredients in your pantry already, and I bet you can pronounce their names. : )
Yes, it will take slightly longer than a cup of insta-hot-chocolate (only about 15 minutes), but it’s worth it.

Ingredients:
1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 c. sugar
1/2 t. cinammon
Pinch of Salt
2/3 c. hot water
6-8 c. milk ( I used 2%)
1 t. pure vanilla extract
Whipped cream, homemade
In a heavy saucepan, combine the cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

Pour the hot water into the pot and stir.

Cook over medium-high heat until the mixture starts to boil.

Add the milk and heat until it reaches the drinking temperature you prefer. Add less milk if you like a strong chocolate taste; add more milk if you like wimpy hot chocolate.
I added 6 cups of 2% milk and then dropped a whole cup of whipped cream into the mix. Important: DO NOT BOIL the milk.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Pour the hot chocolate (carefully) into individual mugs. This recipe made about 5-6 mugs.
Top your homemade hot chocolate off with homemade whipped cream.
(No Cool Whip? I know, I could eat a whole tub of it myself, but whipped cream is SO EASY to make and it tastes sooo good. And, I can pronounce the ingredients.)

Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top if you like, too.

See ya later, Swiss Miss.
