The Whole Kids and Caboodle: The Parent’s Guide to Moving on A Budget

From career changes to just-for-fun fresh starts, there are many reasons why a family may opt to pack up their lives and relocate to a new home. While moving is accompanied by plenty of hassles like packing, transportation, cleaning, and more, moving with children presents a set of unique costs and challenges.

If you’re planning to move your whole kids and caboodle but don’t want to break the bank, check out this parent’s guide to moving on a budget.

Know when to splurge

When you’re fine-tuning your budget, it’s easy to feel pigeonholed and accidentally miss out on opportunities to save time and stress by investing more cash.

While it might seem counterintuitive to your budget, it’s cheaper and less stressful to accept help where it’s needed. For example, if your family owns multiple automobiles or can’t transport your primary vehicle since you’ll be behind the wheel of a moving truck, then the cost to ship a car is a reasonable expense to work into the budget. After all, arranging to personally transport multiple vehicles across state lines with kids in tow will contribute a level of distress to your move that any parent can do without.

If you’re planning to move a house full of items, consider applying the above principles to your moving plans. Hiring a moving company to assist you and your family will help lighten your load and improve your experience.

Plan early and prepare

A lack of preparedness during your relocation can rack up a surprising amount of extra costs. Unforeseen circumstances will quickly drain your wallet, whether you need to buy fast food on the road, snag a last-minute hotel, or take unexpected time off work.

Suppose you can tackle your game plan before you hit the road, thoroughly research your costs, and plan for expenses that may arise. You’ll have an easier time avoiding additional expenses and might even find yourself with some extra money left over after the move. Find a local realtor as they may be able to help you with an idea of the costs you can expect with a move.

Parents of young children are frequently keenly aware that life doesn’t always go according to plan. Do your best to arrange accommodations to take the kids to school, help them stay involved in their regular extracurricular activities, and ensure they’re safe throughout the travel process.

Leave more behind

While it may be tempting to bring each of your sentimental belongings, moving is an ideal opportunity to pack away your packrat tendencies. Take the time to organize and throw away unnecessary items to save yourself some extra money on moving costs and additional stress when unpacking.

Ask for help from friends

Families with children amid a move can get by with some help from their friends. Check in with your pals and ask them if they’d be willing to help watch the kids, pack boxes, load the moving truck, or prepare meals for the family. While movers and babysitters can charge a pretty penny, the people in your life may be willing to help in exchange for lunch and a warm “thank you.” With the aid of your family and friends, you’ll be able to focus your time on remaining attentive to your children and putting in the work to save money where possible.

Before you hit the road

Moving with children can feel daunting and costly. Luckily, once you take the time to plan and adhere to this guide, you’ll be ready to make your big move.
