7. Buy As Few Boxes As Possible
Moving is expensive between getting boxes, packaging tape, renting a moving truck, the gas, paying for people to help you, etc. It all adds up and very quickly! That’s why, whenever we move, we hardly ever pay for boxes. We usually ask on Facebook if anyone has any leftover boxes from things, we check Craigslist for free boxes, and we ask stores like Walmart and Target if they have any leftover boxes we can have. You would be surprised how many free boxes you can get just from asking friends, family, and stores. For our last move I think I bought a total of 5 boxes and that’s only because it was the very last day before we moved and we needed some more boxes, and didn’t have time to go searching for them.
8. Make An “Essentials” Box
There will always be those items that you need easily accessible the last few days before moving and the first few days after moving. Usually those include, toothbrushes, toothpaste, packing tape, scissors, cleaning wipes, toilet paper, leasing or mortgage paperwork, etc. Instead of packing those away in the proper boxes that they would normally go in like bathroom, office, kitchen, etc, put them all in one box that looks different from the rest. A clear, plastic box works great for this. You can easily see the contents when you need something and since it’s not a cardboard box it won’t get lost in the shuffle with the rest of them.
9. Take Pictures Of Your Electronics Before Unhooking Them
If you are really tech savvy, you can probably skip this hack, but if you’re like me and get easily confused between all those cords and connections, take pictures of what all your electronics look like before unplugging them. This way, when you’re ready to set them up in the new place, you can look back at the pictures and know exactly where everything goes. Trust me, it eliminates a lot of headache.
