It’s difficult to get kids interested in anything other than their smartphones. If you are concerned about the environment, though, you have to find ways to convince your children that nature is worth saving. Start with these four ideas to get your kids interested in the environment.
1. Take Them on Nature Hikes
Taking your children on nature hikes will help them understand that the environment isn’t an abstract concept. It’s where people, animals, plants, and other forms of life live. When the environment is harmed, everything connected to it is harmed, too.
Not every kid will have an epiphany about the wonders of nature. For some people, it’s just not that easy to connect. If you find that your kids aren’t involved in their surroundings, turn your hikes into games. Plant and animal identification apps can encourage your kids to spot diverse life in the woods. The person who successfully identifies the most things, wins.
2. Set a Good Example
Children often model their behaviors on what they see adults do. If you are the kind of person who turns off lights when you leave a room, then there is a good chance that your children will pick up that habit too. If you are the kind of person who leaves the car engine running while you’re parked, then your kids will likely follow suit.
Setting a good example could have significant effects on how your children live their lives. Some things that you can do to set a good example include the following:
- Unplug appliances when you’re not using them
- Eat organic fruits and vegetables
- Use energy-efficient settings on appliances
- Plant and care for a backyard garden
If you can’t set a good example, then your kids will rightfully wonder why they should take an interest in the environment.
3. Encourage Bike Rides
Make bike rides a common activity for your family. As soon as your children are old enough (usually four or five years old), get them a small bike with training wheels and teach them how to ride safely. Traveling your neighborhood by bike instead of car is a great way for kids to see things that they wouldn’t notice otherwise.
By making this a fun activity, you can encourage your kids to develop a habit that will benefit them for life. Instead of always hopping in the car when they need to go somewhere, riding a bike will seem like a more fun option.
4. Have Them Help Sort Recycling
Recycling is one of the most crucial things that you and your kids can do to protect the environment. Teach your kids how to sort recycling into categories such as paper, aluminum, and plastic. The specific categories will vary depending on your city’s recycling program. Regardless, the importance of recycling materials will stay with your kids.
In a world full of distractions, it’s not easy to get some kids interested in the environment. By getting your kids involved and setting a good example, though, you can influence their lifelong habits.
