Kitchens are one of the most used rooms in the home — that’s why they are often called the heart of the home! This room brings family’s together around the table for food and good conversation. Whether your kitchen is picture perfect or messy and lived-in, this room is often enjoyed by all who visit.

My family recently moved into an old farmhouse, and we love it! But one of the rooms that needs updating to feel more like the heart of our home is our kitchen. As we plan our kitchen remodel on a low-budget, I did some research to help all of YOU find the best DIY tips in one place to make your kitchen look fabulous!

1. Add a backsplash

You wouldn’t think that a backsplash would make that much of a difference, but trust me, it does! There are so many easy stick-on backsplash options that will completely transform the look of your kitchen! My favorite style is subway tile, but I really like the brick in the image above! It brings a rustic, homey feel to a modern looking kitchen. You can also choose a trendy style because they are easily replaceable.

2. Paint outdated cabinets

Replacing your cabinets is costly!! But instead of looking at your outdated cabinets feeling hopeless, think about their potential! There are very few things a fresh coat of paint can’t fix. The color trends right now are white and different shades of gray! Choose from that pallet and you can’t go wrong. Also, here is beginners guide for painting cabinets.

3. Change cabinet hardware

Maybe you are too nervous to paint your cabinets. If that’s the case, then take a less-risky step forward and change out your cabinet’s hardware. Changing out the knobs and door pulls will be an easy, inexpensive transformation. Click here for a list of mixed-metal hardware.

4. Update lighting

We recently wrote a post on updating your lighting like a pro. This can also be done in your kitchen! In this room of your home, you will want to make sure the lights set the right mood but also gives you enough light to see while cooking. Whether the lighting is a sconce over the kitchen sink, chandeliers over the dining room table, or pendants over the kitchen island, you can be sure updating the light fixtures will dramatically change the look and feel of the room.

Upgrade Your Kitchen Accessories

One of the easiest ways to elevate your kitchen's appearance is to upgrade your accessories. Consider introducing new items such as decorative dish towels, chic cutting boards, or stylish utensil holders. These small changes can enhance the decor and make your kitchen feel more curated and inviting.

Additionally, focusing on color and texture can provide a fresh look to your kitchen space. For instance, vibrant-colored accessories can add a pop of brightness against neutral kitchen hues. By carefully selecting items that reflect your personal style, you can create a cohesive and attractive kitchen atmosphere.

Incorporate Open Shelving

Open shelving is a fantastic trend that adds both functionality and visual interest to your kitchen. Not only does it provide easy access to your kitchen essentials, but it also allows you to display beautiful dishes, glassware, or decorative items. This can help turn your kitchen into a space that feels both lived-in and thoughtfully designed.

When implementing open shelving, it's essential to consider how you style these shelves. Select items that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing, creating a harmonious look that complements your kitchen's design. This approach not only increases your storage capabilities but also showcases your personality through curated displays.
