1. Utility Jacket
This jacket is called many things, such as a utility, cargo, field, military or fatigue jacket but it’s all the same thing. Made of a lightweight cotton, this jacket typically comes in olive green, black or a khaki shade that is perfect for almost any outfit. It’s a great Fall, Spring or Summer night jacket, because it’s thin but will still provide you that necessary extra layer. Plus it has lots of cool pockets to store random kid stuff, like pacifiers and small toys! You can find this ANYWHERE, from teeny bopper stores (think: Charlotte Russe, Forever 21 and Tillys) to higher end department stores (like Nordstrom for a more fitted look).

2. Denim Jacket
“Denim” is the cooler and more fashionable way to say a jean jacket, which is what I call it because I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. Only denim jackets these day are much more fashionable than the acid washed and oversized versions we used to wear. I’ll admit, I never thought I’d see the day when they would come back in style, but they are back and better than ever. Denim goes with almost ANYTHING, from simple black leggings to tightening up flowy dress. Pretty much you the only thing you should never wear a jean jacket with is a pair of similarly colored jeans (Hello, Canadian tuxedo!). You can find these almost any time of the year, and you can wear them that long too!

3. Pea Coat
Ahh, we have the sailors to thank for this must-have staple, the pea coat. Pea coats are historically wool, double-breasted and come in darker colors, although I have seen some amazing tartan plaids which are just as stylish. And would you look at the photo above? I LOVE those brass buttons, reminiscent of a marching band! Your closet needs a pea coat, especially in the Fall and Spring where the weather definitely warrants a warm coat, but not the bulkiness of a parka or puffer. It goes great with jeans but can also pair with a dressier outfit too.

4. Dress Coat
There comes a time when you need a coat for more formal occasions and one that can keep you warm as well (there’s only SO many places you can wear denim). You probably have a nice winter jacket, but it’s probably bulky and not appropriate for just any occasion. Typically dress coats are made in wool, in a neutral color that goes with anything and are longer, resting in between your bottom and knees. You can actually get great deals on dress coats right at the end of coat season, so don’t fear the price tag!

5. Black Blazer
Whether you’re a career woman or a stay at home mom, your closet needs a black blazer. It’s the easiest way to dress up an outfit and look pulled together. Pair it with slacks, a cute skirt or even jeans because you can never go wrong with a black blazer, no matter the time of year. You can purchase in a traditional suit material, or go knit. You can find this jacket anywhere and during any season!
