6 Tips For Maximizing Space In Your Home

Whether you live in a small apartment or a large estate mansion, you will always need more space to make your home feel more comfortable and welcoming. However, homeowners face a challenge when trying to make more space in their homes. Fortunately, there are several quick and easy ways to make your home feel spacious and cozier. If you want to make the most out of your space, you might need to start getting creative with how you store your items. Here are some tips to help you get started.

clean declutter

  • Declutter right away

Clutter is one of the major reasons why your home may feel less spacious. In fact, studies show that one in four Americans have a clutter problem. The piles of clutter you collect in your home can make your rooms appear smaller and create a chaotic vibe, making it difficult for you to fully relax and enjoy the comforts of your home. Therefore, if you want to make your rooms more functional, you must get rid of your clutter as quickly as possible.

However, the decluttering process can be overwhelming, and you may easily give up your efforts. If you are stumped and don’t know where to start, you can begin by conducting a walkthrough of your home and write down what each room is used for and what items or equipment are necessary for that space. This way, you can identify items that aren’t needed and take them out. You can also declutter by throwing out damaged items or have the items recycled if you are conscious of the environment. Holding yard sales or donating items you no longer use, or need is another great way of decluttering your space.

  • Open up your hallways.

When decorating your home, filling every corner or space with a décor piece can be very tempting. That’s what happens with many hallways in most homes. It’s common to find homeowners placing tables, benches, or other décor pieces that are naturally too big for that space. The overdecorating of hallways doesn’t make your home feel comfortable, welcoming, or cozy. Overdecorating your hallways close up the space, making it appear too small and cluttered. Additionally, overdecorating reduces its functionality as it makes your hallway narrower. This means there is limited movement or makes it difficult to do so— defeating the purpose of a hallway.

Therefore, it is best to find smart ways of creating more space. An effective way of doing so is by simply reducing the number of items you have in this area of the home. If having a bare hallway doesn’t work for you, you can hang up some artwork or a potted plant to give it a little character.

  • Place your lighting strategically.

Lights are important in your home. In addition to keeping the home adequately illuminated, lights help you make more space. That’s right! By installing lights in strategic areas, you can easily create an illusion of a spacious room. So, if you have trouble creating space, this trick may be all you need to make a difference. And fortunately, there are tons of design skills and techniques to use light to create an illusion your space is bigger than it is.

A great technique is to place your lights upwards instead of horizontally. Lighting structures placed above can make your room appear more spacious, as it removes the focus from the room’s width and can push your vision upwards. Taller lamps, overhead lighting, and wall sconces are excellent choices to help you achieve this tip. Alternatively, you can also have brightly-colored walls and sheer curtains to allow for more natural lighting in your home. Natural lighting can also make your room appear bigger than it is.

  • Use stylish storage shelves.

Your home is filled with several items, effectively making your space disorganized if not stored properly. A great storage option to invest in is storage shelves. The biggest advantage of getting storage shelves is that they help you save so much space around your home. For instance, architectural shelving and hardware racks are great additions to your living room. These racks are typically designed to be placed vertically and, in effect, provide you with enough floor space when filled. Another advantage of storage shelves is that it helps keep your space organized and offers great convenience.

There are various designs and styles to choose from. From home offices to bathrooms, regardless of your home’s theme or your requirements, there’s a shelf for you.

  • Keep almost everything wall-mounted

Apart from shelves, another smart way to use your space is by wall-mounting anything that can be mounted. A common item kept on the wall is your television, which is a great way to save space, as TVs placed on stands or cabinets can easily take up a lot of space in your home.

When it comes to shelves or cabinets, try as much as possible to use ones that can be easily wall-mounted to give your rooms more space. You must also use hangers or hooks for your keys, jackets, and other important items that you use daily.

  • Don’t forget the outdoors

It’s easy to forget the outdoors when trying to make the most out of your space at home. But it is equally as important. An overgrown and poorly-maintained landscape can create the impression that your home is cluttered and unappealing. Therefore, you must care for your home’s exterior just as you would the interior.

You must regularly mow your lawn, trim your hedges, and keep your flower beds and driveway free from weeds. Remember to always give your home a fresh coat of paint on regular periods and enhance its curb appeal with a colorful front door.

Making the best of the space in your home is essential, and these are some of the best tips to help you save space around your home. All it takes is patience, and you will have the most comfortable home to live in.
