7 Indoor Games And Activities For Kids To Beat Boredom

Having the kids at home means it’s time for the parents to disconnect from screens, be it from your phone, computer, or tablet, to dedicate an exclusive time to the little ones. But there’s no reason to worry if you don’t know where to start. Regardless of what you choose to do, the important thing is to be with the child, and optimize that time. Here are some ideas for indoor games and activities for kids:

1. Sensory Treasure Hunt

Treasure hunting can be even more fun with sensory objects. You can choose four or five different textures, such as smooth, rough, velvety, soft or rigid, and ask the little ones to run around the house and find objects with those textures. Some of the things they could easily find are coins, clothing materials, or items from the kitchen such as salt, sugar, onion, and more. You can build their curiosity and excitement by having them check what these objects are made of using a kids microscope. Kids who are a little older will surely enjoy this activity as not only do they get to bond with you to do something new but also get to learn in the process.

2. Storytelling

A tip for enjoying family moments is storytelling. You can choose your kid’s favorite book, make up a story, or tell one about yourself. Or, you can even make it an interactive activity where you and the kids create characters from scratch and write down a story.

3. Indoor Trolley or Train Tracks

How about making super-fun train tracks indoors? It’s very simple: Spread paper on the floor of the house and tape it down, then draw the streets of the track with chalk, crayon, or colored pencil.

But it doesn’t have to stop there: You can design cities, parks, houses, etc. It’s a fun way to bring outdoor adventures inside!

If you’re feeling bold, you can also use the adhesive tape to draw the track directly on the floor.

4. Discover the Shadow

“This game seems complicated, but it is quite simple, fun, takes up a lot of time and helps developing the reasoning of your kids,” suggests Mark D. Foster, educator at Best Writing Services and Essay Services.

The first part of this game is up to you to set up for the kids! You will need: various objects (pots, plates, glasses, clothes, pens, etc.), a lamp (or flashlight, but you will need a way to keep it fixed in place, such as tape), cardboard, and pen.

First, you stack the objects by creating a funny shape. Then, you direct the light from a flashlight to form the shadow of objects stacked on the floor. From that moment on, don’t move the light anymore.

Place a piece of cardboard where the shadow is and use adhesive tape to keep it fixed on the floor. After the shadow is cast on the cardboard, outline it with the pen. Then, dismantle the stack of objects to undo the shadow so that only its outline on the cardboard is left.

Now that you have your outline on the cardboard, it’s time to call in the kids. The aim of the game is to find out how you stacked the objects to make the drawing on the cardboard—that is, to reproduce the same shadow.

Tip: When you set up the activity, be sure to use the objects to create shadows that are difficult but not impossible for the kids!

5. Draw the Family Tree

family reading and writing together

This is a simple idea to bring the whole family together. Whether on plain paper or cardboard, the cool thing here is to bring everyone together and try to delve as far as possible into family history, remembering names and origins.

Call the grandparents if necessary, do a lot of fun research! Everyone will learn a lot about themselves and their ancestors.

6. Set Up a Camp

It can be in the living room, in the kitchen, on the balcony, or even in the bedroom.

“The idea here is to set up the tent with blankets and chairs, turn off the lights—they can even set up a fake fire with a lamp wrapped in translucent orange paper—and pretend to be camping indoors. Take flashlights, books and snacks to make it even more believable,” says Pamelia C. Hernandez, mom blogger at Academized and Australianreviewer.

7. Play “I Spy”

“I Spy” and its variations are wonderful sensory games for young kids to get to know the world around them. For a child who has never played, you can start by picking out a secret object within plain view and saying, “I Spy something blue.”

If there is only one child, then she can keep guessing until she gets it right. If there are multiple children, then they can take turns looking around and guessing. The first child correct gets to spy something next. It is versatile and you can take it anywhere—making it a perfect indoor activity for kids.

Entertaining energetic children is not always easy. Try out one—or all! —of these indoor activity ideas to make your time indoors with the kids an ongoing adventure that’s both fun and educational!
