8 Ways To Wear A Black Skirt

If I had to guess what the most popular color in women’s closets is, I would say black. (Although technically, black isn’t a color.) As someone with very fair skin, I tend to shy away from the shade. In fact, not every woman looks flattering in black. However, because it is such a common part of women’s wardrobes, it’s worth offering tips on how to wear it. Many moms have black as their “go to” shade and stock up on black pieces.

One piece of clothing that any woman can wear is a skirt. Since there are so many different styles, you can find one that works best for your body shape and pair it with other pieces to create a look suited just for you! Whether you’re a pleated skirt kind of lady, or you prefer pencil skirts, these 8 looks will definitely give you inspiration. Try them out and see which one works best for you!

1. With A Classic Striped Top

One of the easiest ways to wear a black skirt is with a classic striped top. Black and white is one of those color combinations that will never go out of style because it works so well. To punch your look up a notch, try adding a pop of color with a fun pump.

I love the way fashion blogger Tam of Hello Framboise paired her black skirt with a pair of wine colored suede slingbacks. Not only did she spice up the black and white ensemble, she mixed in another texture, which is a great way to step up your style.

2. With Contrasting Prints

My absolute favorite thing in the world when it comes to putting outfits together is mixing prints. It’s easy to do, once you get the hang of it, and it really takes your outfit to a new level. My “go to” print of choice is animal print, which is so fabulous, it could practically be considered a neutral. Since most animal print has black in it, it’s perfect for wearing with a black skirt. Tie it together with a blouse in a contrasting print that also has black, and you’ve got a look that is great for date night or an after work happy hour.

3. With A Chambray Button Down

Most of us mamas don’t have time for fancy outfits during the week. But you’ve likely got a chambray button down in your closet. With fall approaching, that chambray beauty is the perfect piece to pair with a casual black skirt. Tuck it in to clean up the look, and throw on a pair of comfortable sandals or ballet flats.

Take a look at how Ashley from Pursuit Of Shoes wore her chambray and black skirt together. It’s a great look for busy moms on the go! Get more chambray outfit ideas from our article, 10 Ways To Style A Chambray Shirt.

4. With Sporty Pieces

Many women don’t feel comfortable combining different styles of clothing in one outfit. But mamas- you totally can! Let’s say you have a dressy black skirt, but your style is more sporty and you don’t want to look too girly. Grab a comfortable graphic tee, your favorite pair of sneakers and a basic backpack. When you put everything together, you’ve got an outfit that I like to call “sporty chic.” It’s sporty, but with a touch of class. It’s comfortable, but you still make a statement. You could rock this look at your child’s soccer game, while running errands, or for a trip to the movies with your gal pals.

5. With More Black

Sometimes you just don’t feel like getting creative with your outfit. I’ve been there! A quick way to stay stylish that doesn’t take a lot of effort is to do a monochrome look. (For moms, I prefer the term “momochrome,” which I’d like to patent if it hasn’t been done already.) Since monochrome is more about colors than it is style, you can create a head to toe look in the same shade with any style of black skirt. The key to mastering monochrome is to offset the look with tiny touches of texture, print or metals (like jewelry).

Visit Sweenee Style to see how Adrienne mixed up her monochrome in two different looks using a black skirt!

6. With A Sexy Camisole

Let’s talk about sex sexy for a minute. You can look sexy and elegant at the same time. In fact, you can wear sexy pieces that are even office appropriate! One of my favorite ways to wear a pencil skirt for the office (in this case, a black one) is with a sexy camisole, topped with a blazer. When fall gets here and the days start to get cooler, put on a pair of black tights to add an extra layer of warmth. I love the idea of going with a rich fall colored heel to spice things up. Finally, go from day to night by accessorizing with some classy jewelry and an evening clutch.

7. With A Cozy Sweater

Pull out that favorite fall sweater you have and throw it on with that black skirt you’ve been wanting to wear. Add a hint of fun with a beanie style hat. The combination of the textured sweater and contrasting skirt looks great and gives your outfit character.

Anna-Lea, fashion blogger of Fashion Hippie Loves pulls off this black skirt + sweater look wonderfully.

8. With A Casual Sweatshirt

Since I’ve become a mom, my legs and my razor have not been the best of friends. When I don’t have time to shave, I spend my days in maxi skirts. They are great because you can wear them in any season. If you’re all about comfortable fashion, a maxi skirt looks cute with a comfortable sweatshirt and ballet flats. This outfit works for running errands, or grabbing a casual lunch with friends. Take your look up a notch by adding a pop of color with jewelry and a practical bag. You’ll make a bold statement without feeling overdone.
