One of the things I love most about the approach of the holidays is getting to make a wreath for our front door. Usually wreath making for me is very easy and comes really naturally. I consider myself a pretty creative and crafty person, but when it came to making a wreath for St. Patrick’s day I just couldn’t find any kind of inspiration. I searched Pinterest for 30 minutes with no luck. Although I liked some of the ones I found, I didn’t really love them. So, I decided to head to the craft store and peruse the isles to see what I could find.
I have to admit, as I walked around the craft store I found very little that was eye catching. I did find some ribbon I liked, but that was about all. Then I found some foam shamrocks that I thought could look cute, so I bought those, as well. I ended up buying much more than I really ended up using (like gold coins and a foam leprechaun), but I figured I’d rather have more options than not enough.
Here are the supplies you’ll need in order to make this wreath:
-foam wreath form (mine is 16″ but you can do whatever size you’d like)
-ribbon (I used one 15ft long roll)
-twine
-foam shamrocks (of varying sizes)
-permanent marker
-scissors
-hot glue gun
To start you’ll want to glue the beginning of the ribbon onto the back of the wreath form. Then, start wrapping the ribbon around the whole wreath until it’s completely covered. Next, glue the ribbon onto the back of the wreath to secure it, then cut off any excess ribbon.
Next, you’ll need to cut out some triangles to make the banner. You can use any medium you’d like (such as burlap, paper, or felt), but I happened to have some extra foam shamrocks, which is what I used. Just trace five triangles then cut them out.
Next, write the letters for “lucky” out on each of the triangles.
Now you can glue the triangles onto some twine. Simply take some hot glue and put it on the back top part of the triangle in a line, then place the twine in the glue and let it dry.
Now you can glue the banner onto the wreath. First, place it where you’d like it to go. Then, while holding it in place, pick up the wreath and turn it over, then glue each end of the twine to the wreath and cut off the excess pieces.
Now, you can take your felt shamrocks and bend each of the “leaves” up so that it now becomes three dimensional instead of flat.
Place some hot glue on the back of each shamrock then glue them onto the wreath in whatever placement you’d like. Continue doing this until you reach your desired look.
And that, my friends, is all it takes to make this simple, adorable St. Patrick’s Day wreath.
