Having a baby is a huge change in a parent’s life. It’s one of the most terrifying, exciting, and tiring experiences you’ll ever go through. It will bring on so many different feelings and emotions that you’ve never experienced before. On top of that, there will be so many new changes to your life and it will completely turn your world upside down. I wish someone had told me in more detail what to expect after I had my first son. Even after taking parenting classes and talking to friends and family I was shocked at some of the things that happened to me after I gave birth. There are 14 things I wish I had known about postpartum that I’m going to share with you in the hopes that it’ll help you be more prepared and know what to expect about this life changing event.

1. The First Night After Birth Is HELL
Seriously, the first night after our son was born was a living hell. You are SO tired from birthing a baby, from trying to breastfeed, and having visitors that all you want to do is pass out and go to sleep. But you literally will not get any sleep and here is why: nurses will be coming in all the time to check on you as well as the baby, you have to feed your new baby very often like every hour and a half, and your baby will need it’s diaper changed very often as well. There’s a lot going on and on top of all that the hospital bed is not the most comfortable place to sleep. Don’t worry, though, the next night will be easier and you won’t be as exhausted. Take comfort in the fact that every day and every night gets a little easier.
2. Take Advantage Of The Mesh Underwear
I just have to say, the mesh underwear that the hospital gives you to wear after birth is seriously amazing. I had many people tell me how gross and ugly it was and to bring my own underwear, but I was bleeding so much afterwards that I didn’t want to ruin my own underwear. I decided to try out the hospital mesh underwear and it was life changing. It’s really nice and snug so it feels like it’s keeping everything in and in place, yet it’s still very stretchy and comfortable. It almost feels like you’re not wearing anything because it’s so light and stretchy. I don’t understand how it works, but it really does work wonders. That being said, it is really ugly, but hey, it’s disposable so after you bleed on it just throw it away. No need to make extra laundry for yourself. And before you leave the hospital, ask for more. I asked a few different nurses for more and left with a ton that lasted me a few weeks. It was amazing.
3. Get The Thickest Menstrual Pads You Can
After you give birth you’re going to be bleeding. A lot. I knew I would bleed afterwards but I didn’t really expect it to be as heavy for as long. Some women, however, are lucky and don’t bleed as much. Just in case, though, stock up on the thickest pads you can. You’ll need as much padding as possible, just trust me on this one. If you’re one of the lucky women who doesn’t then count your lucky stars!
