Summer will be here before you know it. Gone are the organized routines of school and after school activities, and we have to find a new normal amidst the sticky mornings and carefree nature of the hottest months of the year. Until I had a school-aged child, I never understood why parents loathed the end of school. Summer was so fun! But now that I have a daughter heading into her second year of school, I’ve already been given a taste of the normalcy that school routines have to offer. And now I’m scared for summer.

I have to be honest and say that my fear mostly comes from wondering how I’m going to manage my work from home job of 25 hours a week without the regular quiet and solitude that school brings. How will I entertain my kiddo, while maintaining my role as an employee? The answer of course, lies in careful planning. Pre-kids, I relied on my indestructible memory and ability to keep everything neat and tidy in my head. Those days are long gone. I’m a pen and pencil kind of girl, in an app and technology world. Sure, you can sync you calendar with your husband, but I much prefer the creativity and personalization that comes with writing down my own appointments and obligations. I love keeping my life straight with a planner and I know many of you do too.

Now, before you say, “my life isn’t that complicated, I don’t need a planner” let me ask you a few questions. Do you have any trips planned this summer? Do you work? How will you coordinate your time off, who to watch your pets and even to housesit? Do you like long days at the beach, pool or lake? Do you like dinner? Because even though you may enjoy a sun-filled day playing outside, your family is going to want to eat dinner once they get home. Do you work full time and need a variety of summer camps for the kids? All of these things are perfect for a planner, and why a planner is perfect for you!

Life As Mama recognizes the potential that every summer brings to have fun and bond with your kids. This year, we want to make it easy for you and that’s why we are partnering with Purple Trail, experts in custom designed stationary, cards and planners. This summer, we are hosting a giveaway and one lucky winner will be the recipient of a completely custom planner! Summer is about to get organized.

Stay Organized During Summer Break

Summer break can be a challenging transition, especially for parents accustomed to school routines. With children at home, the days can quickly turn chaotic without a plan. To maintain some structure, consider creating a weekly schedule that outlines activities, chores, and relaxation time, ensuring everyone knows what to expect each day.

An organized environment not only helps in managing time but also encourages children to play and engage in productive activities. Involving your child in the planning process can also foster responsibility and give them a sense of autonomy. Together, you can brainstorm fun summer projects, home science experiments, or outdoor adventures that keep boredom at bay.

Healthy Meal Planning for Families

As families enjoy the longer days of summer, the importance of meal planning becomes even more essential. Preparing healthy meals ensures that everyone is nourished and satisfied after a day of activities. You can start by brainstorming a list of favorite summer recipes and identifying when to prepare them based on your weekly schedule.

Incorporating seasonal fruits and vegetables not only enhances meals but also provides the nutritional benefits your family needs. Preparing snacks in advance will also prevent unhealthy impulsive eating, making it easier for everyone to reach for something nutritious. This planning will set a positive tone for the family mealtime experience, turning it into a cherished daily ritual.

Finding Balance Between Fun and Responsibilities

One of the biggest challenges during summer is maintaining a balance between leisure and responsibilities. While it’s important to enjoy the sunny days, chores and daily responsibilities shouldn't be neglected. Establishing a routine that allocates time for both play and responsibilities can prevent feelings of overwhelm for both parents and children.

Creating a family chore chart that designates small tasks each day can foster team spirit while also teaching accountability. Setting aside "family fun time" as a reward after completing household tasks can make chores seem less daunting and more like part of a game. This balance encourages a sense of achievement and keeps studies, chores, and play all in harmony.

Creative Summer Activities for Kids

To keep your kids engaged and stimulated over the summer, planning creative activities can be a game changer. Activities like DIY crafts, science experiments, or gardening not only stimulate creativity but also provide opportunities for learning. These hands-on projects can anchor your day and give children a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Additionally, consider local community events like summer reading programs or art classes that encourage kids to socialize while doing something productive. Engaging in these activities not only combats boredom but also strengthens skills such as teamwork and critical thinking. Making it a point to cycle through various activities throughout the summer can make each day feel fresh and exciting.
