Sometimes the whole process of going to a salon and getting your hair done can be a bit of a mystery. There are so many logistics from making appointments, to tipping your stylist, to having a stylist assistant help you, that when you throw it all together it can be a bit overwhelming. There may be certain aspects about going to a salon that you’ve never even thought about before like if you should take your kids with you. We’ve rounded up 10 etiquette tips for going to the salon that will help you through the whole process and make it a little easier and more comfortable for you.

1. How Much Should You Tip Your Stylist?

One of the biggest questions people often ask about going to a salon and getting their hair done is how much they are supposed to tip their stylist. This can often times be very confusing especially with all the differing prices between salons for various services. Stylists depend a lot on the tips they receive from their clients. As a general rule of thumb you should always leave about a 15 to 20 percent tip. If you’ve been going to the same stylist for a long time and they always treat you really well and do a good job, leave at least 20 percent. The better you tip them each time the more they will want to work hard for you and do exactly what you want.

2. Should You Tip The Stylist Assistant?

Stylists often times have assistants that help them sweep the fallen hair up on the floor or wash and dry client’s hair. If their assistant helped with your hair in any way you should tip them. They are working hard, just like the stylists, and should be tipped. You obviously don’t need to tip them a lot if all they did was wash your hair, in fact just a few dollars would suffice. But if they are washing your hair, brushing it, drying it, and then sweeping up after you, then you’ll want to tip them a little more like around $5-$7.

3. Should You Tell Your Stylist If You Don’t Like Your Hair?

Yes. Always tell your stylist if you aren’t happy with your hair. If you don’t, they will never know that you are unhappy and won’t be able to fix what they are doing wrong. However, do be kind when you tell them what you are unhappy with. There’s no reason to be rude. Kindly tell them what you are unhappy about and they will be more than obliged to fix it for you. If you’re uncomfortable telling the stylist yourself, you can certainly ask to talk to the salon owner and discuss the situation with them.
