5. Quiet Play Time
For an older child that has a hard time calming down before bed, try letting them have quiet play time before you put them down for the night. Establish the quiet play time area and explain that they must play quietly, without talking, and by themselves. You may have to give them a list of things they could do for quiet play time, such as, coloring, playing with building blocks, reading books on their own, etc. The goal is for them to be quiet and to do an activity that will calm them down. Establish how long the play time will be, as well. Some kids may only need 5 minutes, others may need 15. Set a timer or tell them how much time they have left every few minutes, so that when the play time is over they’re expecting it and don’t get upset.
