
6. Pumpkin (everything)
Pumpkins are another fruit (yes, fruit not a vegetable!) that are ripe during harvest time. They probably WERE present at the first Thanksgiving, but not in pie form we are used to. It was most likely served along side other gourds and squash. Pumpkin pie made a later appearance in the 1800’s and not before then because settlers didn’t have ready access to pie crust necessities like butter and flour. Even then, pumpkin pies looked a lot more like apple pies do – lumpy and not pureed.
